Archivo Barragán

Archivo Barragán

Location: Parque Lira, Mexico D.F. , MX

Status: Unbuilt

The proposed archive - which holds and exhibits the collected works of architect Luis Barragán - immerses itself within a lush park in Mexico City. Parque Lira is an approximately 250m by 410m wide park located in the Tacubaya district, just a 10-15 min walk from Barragán’s most iconic projects including Casa Estudio Barragán. The park is full of dense greenery and terraced volcanic stone.

Archivo Barragán is a proposed permanent facility to reclaim and exhibit the works of Luis Barragán, long hidden from the public in Vitra’s Swiss facility. Not only does the archive secure his work, but it is also meant to become a landmark for other architectural exhibitions. As an object in the landscape, the archive builds itself up from Parque Lira’s volcanic rock. The desired effect is one of deep introspection. Compared to its stark, protective façade, the archive and gallery radiate with a warm interior glow
